How to Use This Calculator
Enter every cost category that applies to your job — materials, labor, subcontractors, equipment, and any other expenses. Then enter your selling price (what the customer pays). The calculator shows your total cost, gross profit, profit margin, and the markup on cost. Leave any field blank if it doesn't apply to the job.
Formulas
Total Cost = Materials + Labor + Subs + Equipment + Other
Gross Profit = Selling Price − Total Cost
Profit Margin = Gross Profit ÷ Selling Price × 100
Markup = Gross Profit ÷ Total Cost × 100

- Materials: $4,000
- Labor: $3,000
- Subcontractors (electrical): $1,000
- Equipment rental: $500
- Other: $500
- Total cost: $9,000
- Selling price: $12,500
- Gross profit: $3,500
- Profit margin: $3,500 ÷ $12,500 = 28%
- Markup on cost: $3,500 ÷ $9,000 = 38.9%

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I include overhead in the cost fields?
Yes — include any overhead allocated to this job (shop time, vehicle cost, insurance portion, etc.) in the “Other Costs” field. Your margin calculation is only accurate if all costs are captured.
What's the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a percentage of revenue. Markup is profit as a percentage of cost. They sound similar but produce different numbers from the same job. See the Markup vs Margin Calculator for conversion.
Does this calculator account for taxes?
No — this shows gross profit before income tax. Net profit after tax depends on your business structure, deductions, and tax bracket.
