Double Time Pay Calculator

Calculate your 2× overtime rate for California law, holidays, and extended shifts.

What Is Double Time Pay?

Double time pay is exactly 2× your regular hourly rate. If you earn $20/hr normally, your double time rate is $40/hr. It is separate from time and a half (1.5×), which covers most federal overtime situations under FLSA.

Formula

Double Time Rate = Hourly Rate × 2

Double Time Pay = Double Time Hours × Double Time Rate

Example: $20/hr × 2 = $40/hr. 4 hours at double time = $160.00.

When Double Time Applies

California law mandates double time in two situations:

  • Hours worked beyond 12 in a single workday (hours 8–12 are time and a half; beyond 12 is double time)
  • All hours worked on the 7th consecutive day of a workweek (first 8 hours at time and a half, beyond 8 at double time)

Federal FLSA does not require double time. Outside California, double time typically comes from employer policy, union contracts, or state law.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is double time required for holidays?

Not by federal law. Holiday double time is employer or contract policy — check your employee handbook or union agreement.

What is the difference between time and a half and double time?

Time and a half = 1.5× your rate (most FLSA overtime). Double time = 2× your rate (California daily OT over 12 hours, 7th-day work, or holiday policies).

Does double time apply to salaried workers?

Only if the salaried worker is non-exempt under FLSA and applicable state law. Most exempt salaried employees are not entitled to any overtime pay.

Can I use this for holiday pay?

Yes — enter your hourly rate and the hours worked at double time. Add the result to your regular pay for total compensation that week.
