Why Payroll Uses Decimal Hours

Payroll systems multiply hours by a rate to calculate wages. Decimals make this exact arithmetic simple: 7 hours 45 minutes as a decimal (7.75) multiplied by $20/hr equals $155.00 exactly. Using hours and minutes separately would require converting to avoid rounding errors.

How to Convert

Decimal Hours = Whole Hours + (Minutes ÷ 60)

Examples: 7h 30min = 7 + 30/60 = 7.50  |  8h 15min = 8 + 15/60 = 8.25  |  6h 45min = 6 + 45/60 = 6.75

Worked Example

A typical work week at $19/hr:

DayHours WorkedDecimal
Monday8h 15min8.25
Tuesday7h 45min7.75
Wednesday8h 00min8.00
Thursday8h 30min8.50
Friday7h 30min7.50
Weekly Total40.00

40.00 hours × $19/hr = $760.00 gross pay
