Overnight indicators (+1) appear when the end time is before the start time, signaling a next-day end.

How Overnight Shifts Work

When a shift starts before midnight and ends the next calendar day, simple time subtraction produces a negative number. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM would calculate as −16 hours without correction. This calculator detects when the end time is earlier than the start time and automatically adds 24 hours to the end time to produce the correct duration.

Worked Example

Shift: 10:00 PM (22:00) to 6:00 AM (06:00)

  • Without correction: 06:00 − 22:00 = −16 hours (wrong)
  • With midnight detection: (06:00 + 24:00) − 22:00 = 8 hours (correct)

After entering breaks (e.g., 30 minutes): Net shift = 8h − 0.5h = 7.5 hours.

Weekly Total

Enter each night's shift to accumulate a weekly total. If you include an hourly rate, gross weekly pay is calculated. Hours over 40 are flagged — relevant if your employer pays overtime on your night shift schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calculator handle shifts that cross midnight?

It detects when end time is earlier than start time and adds 24 hours to the end time automatically. You see a “+1” indicator next to the end time when this correction is applied.

What if I work multiple overnight shifts per week?

Enter each day's shift separately — the weekly total accumulates across all days automatically.

Does overtime apply to night shift workers?

Under FLSA, overtime is based on total hours in a workweek (over 40), not on the time of day you work. Night shift itself does not trigger overtime — total weekly hours do. California and some other states also apply daily overtime rules.

Can I calculate pay for a split shift?

Enter the start and end of each segment separately by day. Use the break field for any unpaid gap within a single shift.
